Headaches? Your Doctor Can Help You More Than You Think

Is Your Survival Kit Ready? Here's What You Need To Put In It

Everyone should have a disaster survival kit on hand. Survival preparation isn't only for fringe thinkers who fear alien invasions or the zombie apocalypse. Disasters happen every day. A tornado, hurricane, earthquake, or freak snowstorm could leave you isolated and fending for yourself. You can find all kinds of disaster survival kits for sale, which makes it very easy to get your preparations in order. Here are a few things you want to be sure you have on hand.

Water And Filter

You won't last long without water, but water is heavy and difficult to carry if you need to be on the move. Therefore, it's a good idea to store both water and a filter, so you'll be able to drink no matter where you end up. You can store water in your home in gallon jugs. You can also buy survival water in small pouches that you can stow in the glove box of your car or carry in your backpack.

If you're forced out of your home, you'll need to find water from another source. That's where a filter is necessary. You don't want to drink unfiltered wild water because you could get very sick if it's contaminated. Run it through a filter first that removes microbes and pollutants, so the water is safe to drink and use in cooking. When you have a water filter, you have an endless supply of water to drink as long as there is a river, lake, or other source of water nearby.

First Aid Supplies

Preventing an infection is very important if you won't be able to access medical care from a doctor or hospital. Your medical kit should have an antiseptic, so you can treat cuts and other wounds to prevent infections from developing. You may also want to store bandages that will keep your wound clean while it heals. The easiest way to prepare medical supplies is to buy a kit that already contains the most needed items. That way, you won't forget anything important.

Survival blanket

A survival blanket, or space blanket, doesn't take up very much room at all and it is very lightweight. It reflects your body heat back to you, so it will keep you warm if you're stranded outside in the cold. It can double as protection from rain too. If you live in a cold climate, you should have one of these blankets in your car and keep some on standby in your house and in your bug out bag, as one of these blankets could keep you from succumbing to cold temperatures.

Food

It's always a good idea to have a small stockpile of food in your pantry, so you can survive alone if a disaster strikes your town. However, you'll also need food if you have to grab your bug out bag and take off. That's why it's a good idea to keep at least some food in your backpack or car, so you'll have something to eat if you get stranded. Choose foods that won't spoil or deteriorate. Good choices might be peanut butter, canned nuts, sunflower seeds, and jerky. Choose food that doesn't take up much room, and that you can forget about for months, but will still be edible when you need it.

Survival packs come in different styles and contain different items that fit just about every need. While you can create your own for home use and store it in a metal trash can with tight-fitting lid, you need to be more thoughtful about what you'll take when you need to be on the move or survive in your car. That's when it might be best to buy a kit already made by an expert who is better able to anticipate what you'll need to keep you nourished and alive as long as possible.
